Umrah Packing Checklist: What to Pack and What to Wear for Umrah
Knowing how to prepare for Umrah makes a big difference to your journey. When your documents are in order and your bag has what you need, you can focus on worship rather than last-minute problems. This Umrah packing checklist covers travel documents, health and vaccination requirements, what to wear, everyday essentials and tips for travelling with family.
The rulings (masa’il) in this article follow the Hanafi school. They are taken from fatwas published by Dar-ul-Ifta Ahlesunnat (Dawat-e-Islami), which are listed with links in the Sources section below. This article is a general guide and is not itself a fatwa. If you have a question about your own situation, please ask a qualified scholar.

Umrah Vaccination and Health Requirements
Which Vaccines Do You Need for Umrah?
The Saudi Ministry of Health publishes health requirements for Umrah travellers each season. At the time of writing (1447H / 2026), these include:
- Meningococcal vaccine (required for all travellers): an ACYW (or ACYWX) vaccine received at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia. A conjugate vaccine is valid for 5 years and a polysaccharide vaccine for 3 years.
- COVID-19 vaccine (required for high-risk groups): for example, people over 65, pregnant women and people with certain chronic illnesses or weakened immunity.
- Polio and yellow fever: required only for travellers from certain countries listed by the Ministry of Health.
- Recommended: keeping your routine vaccinations up to date, and a seasonal flu vaccine.
Health requirements can change from one season to the next. Before you travel, check the latest requirements from the Saudi Ministry of Health and speak to your GP or a travel health clinic. Leave enough time to arrange any vaccines, as the meningococcal vaccine must be given at least 10 days before arrival.
Medicines and a Basic First-Aid Kit
- Any prescription medicines you take, in their original packaging, with a copy of your prescription
- Pain relief and medicine for fever
- Rehydration sachets
- Plasters and blister plasters
- Anti-chafing balm (in ihram, avoid scented products and sesame or olive oil, which are treated as perfume)
- Throat lozenges, as coughs are common in crowded places
- Hand sanitiser and face masks
If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor for advice before travelling and carry a short note about your condition and medication.
What to Wear for Umrah
Ihram Clothing for Men
- Two unstitched ihram sheets (it helps to pack a spare set)
- A money belt or pouch for your passport, documents and cash. Using a belt just to tighten the lower sheet is makruh (disliked), and men must not wear a stitched support belt in ihram in the usual way; if it is needed for a genuine reason such as back pain, there is no sin, but a penalty still applies
- Sandals or slippers that leave uncovered the raised bone on the top of the foot and everything above it
- No scented toiletries for use in ihram. It is also better to avoid even unscented soap while in ihram, because removing dirt in ihram is makruh tanzihi (slightly disliked), although no penalty is due if it is used
What Women Wear for Umrah
Women do not need to wear white or a special garment: they enter ihram in their usual stitched clothes, without perfume. They may wear gloves and socks and must cover the head, but they must keep the face uncovered, so nothing should touch the face. For details of the rules women follow in ihram, see our guide to Umrah rituals and duas.
Clothes for the Rest of Your Trip
- Light, breathable and modest clothing for warm weather
- A light jumper or shawl for air-conditioned hotels, mosques and coaches
- Comfortable walking shoes, plus slip-on footwear that is easy to remove at the mosque
- Clothes suitable for ziyarat and travel between Makkah and Madinah
Umrah Essentials Checklist
- Small backpack or cross-body bag
- Shoe bag for carrying footwear inside the mosque
- Reusable water bottle
- Lightweight prayer mat
- Pocket Qur’an or Qur’an app, and a list of duas
- Mobile phone and charger
- Power bank
- Plug adaptor: Saudi Arabia mainly uses the same three-pin plug as the UK, while travellers from the USA and Canada will usually need an adaptor and should check that their devices work on 220–230V
- A handheld umbrella for shade. Men in ihram must not wear a cap, and umbrellas strapped to the head are not allowed in ihram for men or women
- Sunglasses (allowed in ihram) and sun cream (choose a fragrance-free one for use in ihram)
- Tissues and wet wipes (using scented wet wipes in ihram requires a penalty)
- Small torch or phone light
- Earplugs and an eye mask for rest
Umrah Packing List for Ladies
- Several sets of loose, modest outfits, including clothing for ihram
- Scarves and underscarves
- Comfortable, non-slip footwear
- Safety pins and hair ties
- A small bag that is easy to carry in crowds
- Personal care items (avoid scented products while in ihram)
- Any personal medicines and sanitary products you may need
Packing for Children and Elderly Relatives
- Copies of children’s documents and a card with your phone number and hotel name, kept in their pocket
- Snacks and a refillable water bottle for each child
- Light, comfortable clothing and spare outfits
- A lightweight pushchair for young children, where practical
- Walking aids, and any mobility equipment an elderly relative needs
- Extra medicines and a list of doses for anyone on regular medication
When travelling with children or elderly relatives, a hotel close to the Haram can make daily walking much easier. Our hotel booking assistance can help you find suitable accommodation.
What Not to Pack
- Perfume and scented products for use while in ihram (they can be used once your Umrah is complete)
- Too many heavy or bulky items, since you will walk a lot and space in your bag is limited
- Valuables you do not need
- Any items restricted by airline or Saudi customs rules, so check the latest guidance before you fly
How to Prepare for Umrah Before You Travel
Good preparation goes beyond packing:
- Learn the rites: read our Umrah guide and our step-by-step guide to Umrah rituals and duas.
- Build up your walking: Tawaf and Sa’i involve a lot of walking, so regular walks in the weeks before you travel can help.
- Sort out your visa and permit early: see our Umrah visa guide.
- Plan where you will stay: read about Makkah and Madinah hotels.
- Plan your time for ziyarat: see our ziyarat tours.
- Prepare spiritually: set your intentions, make a list of duas and seek forgiveness from those around you before you travel.
